Depart 10:00am Self-Guided Tour To Pullman Historic District

Depart From
Hotel Lobby

Pullman is a unique community on Chicago's far, south side that blends the history from many different disciplines in a fascinating touring experience. Visiting this area today brings you into that history and also into a new sense of place, seeing the community as it is today.

The model industrial town of Pullman, Illinois had its beginning on May 26, 1880, in the open prairie. This town was the physical expression of an idea born and nurtured in the mind of George M. Pullman, President of Pullman's Palace Car Company. He decided to develop a model community, a total environment, superior to that available to the working class elsewhere. By so doing, he hoped to avoid strikes, attract the most skilled workers and attain greater productivity as a result of the better health, environment and spirit of his employees.

This self-guided tour will utilize the nearby CTA Bus #151 to reach Metra's Millennium Station were you will board an Electric Line train departing at 11:00am. Upon reaching the 111th Street-Pullman Station at 11:32am, it is a short two block walk to the Historic Pullman Visitor Center. After a 15 minute orientation film, you'll be free to enjoy a walking tour of the district by picking up a copy of the walking tour brochure. There is NO entrance fee.

Returning downtown, Electric Line trains leave the 111th Street - Pullman station at 1:23pm & 2:13pm. The Metra train tickets are $10.50 round trip per person and may be purchased when you arrive at Millennium Station. The CTA bus fare is $2.25 per person per trip. Tour Of The Historical Railroad Collections Of The Newberry Library

Depart From
Hotel Lobby

The Newberry Library holds several large and important archives of Midwestern railroad companies: the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy (CB&Q) Railroad Company, the Illinois Central (IC) Railroad Company, and the Pullman Company. Smaller railroad-related collections have also been added.

The CB&Q archives at the Newberry mainly document the nineteenth and twentieth century operations of the Burlington and its component roads.

The bulk of the IC records at the Newberry date from 1851 to 1906, but there are also important groupings of twentieth-century material. The archives include practically complete correspondence files of company presidents; many large-scale "track books" with maps of the lines, sidings, and wayside structures; reports of construction and materials; and information about the day-to-day operation of the railroad, including employees and timetables.

The business archives of the Pullman's Palace Car Company and Pullman Company held at the Newberry include records of the entire firm until the mid-1920s when separate manufacturing and operating (sleeping car operation, service, and repair) companies were formed. After that date, the records mainly chronicle the activities of the operating company. In addition to voluminous individual employee records, there are extensive files on management policy relating to personnel and labor relations. Another large body of materials comprises the records of individual Pullman cars (e.g., drawings, specifications, photographs), 1299 of which have been digitized and made available online. There are also numerous scrapbooks documenting the nineteenth-century operation of the company, including the Town of Pullman, the Strike of 1894, business records, and records of subsidiary companies and competitor firms absorbed by Pullman.

This is a very rare opportunity to view these historic records and documents. The tour is strictly limited to 14 persons. The Newberry is located approximately six blocks from the hotel; about a 10 minute walk. There is no charge or fee for this tour, but advance registration is required.
