Amtrak’s Management Associate Program: The national passenger carrier offers a 12 to 18-month program to develop “high-potential entry-level employees develops by providing skills and experiences to prepare them for leadership positions, in both business and technical management within Amtrak Corporation.”

US Department of Transportation Internships: List of opportunities available within the federal agency that regulates the transportation sector and carries out national transportation policy.

American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials: National organization of state DOTs lists jobs in its offices as well as at the US DOT and state DOTs.

Idealist.org: Excellent job-posting center for careers and internships in the nonprofit sector. Create a free account and sign up to be alerted when nonprofit jobs in any number of categories, including “Energy Conservation and Green Living” and “Travel and Transportation.”

Transportation for America: This broad national coalition of advocates of a safer, healthier, greener transportation system (of which NARP is a member) has a sizable professional staff in Washington, DC, and hires interns for spring, summer and fall sessions. Friends of the Earth: This environmental nonprofit frequently has job openings in green transportation advocacy.

Natural Resources Defense Council: This major environmental nonprofit is part of the OneRail Coalition and often offers jobs related to transportation.

Norfolk Southern Corporation Co-op/Intern Program: This Class I railroad offers short-term positions for undergraduate and graduate students “in almost every aspect of our organization, from marketing to operations to information technology. We use a hands-on approach and challenge co-ops and interns with a variety of responsibilities. Our goal is to give you an experience that will complement your education and utilize your expertise.”

CSX Internships and Co-ops: This Class I railroad “offers challenging assignments and real-world experiences that develop self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment while earning college credit towards graduation. Opportunities are available throughout the CSX network.”

BNSF College Internship Program: This Class I railroad offers a “three month program designed to provide college students with meaningful, practical on-the-job experience in a business environment.”

Union Pacific Co-ops and Internships: “The UP co-op and internship programs provide college students with meaningful and practical on-the-job experience in a business environment.”
