Amtrak announced today the retirement of Graham Claytor as Chairman and President, effective December 6. Claytor is 81 years old and has served in those Amtrak positions since July 1982.
Effective December 7, he will be replaced by Thomas M. Downs, who is the out-going Commissioner of New Jersey DOT and Chairman of New Jersey Transit. He has held those posts since 1990. Previously, he was president of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority in New York; City Administrator of Washington, D.C.; Transportation Director of Washington, D.C.; and Executive Director of UMTA in the Carter Administration. Downs also served as the D.C. representative on the board of the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation. Downs is 50 years old.
