Last night, House Republicans and Democrats reached an agreement on reconfiguring the Amtrak board. This development should allow the House to move forward on passing an Amtrak reauthorization bill, which has been tied up in the House for the past week on the board issue. The House will be in session today, and possibly tomorrow, and then adjourn until late January.
The House agreement on the Amtrak board differs from language in the Senate bill, but we understand key Senate players support the agreement and it is expected that, before adjournment, Congress will complete the work necessary to send the bill to President Clinton for signature.
The agreed-upon language reduces the size of the Amtrak board from nine to seven.
