Special Summer 2010 Opportunity for High School Students in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota Why are trains called the “green transportation alternative”? How do products find their way from China to the shelves at Wal-Mart? How fast can high-speed passenger trains move? This exploration introduces you to the wide world of rail and intermodal transportation, touching both passenger and freight traffic. You get to ride a train, see a massive locomotive in action, and learn how companies use trucks, trains and ships to transport products from all over the world to the U.S. You will also find out how fast passenger trains can run in different parts of the world, why railroads are so energy-efficient and why rail transit is used to move masses of people in large metropolitan areas. Notes: exploration is open to students entering grades 10-12.Live-in participants only. This exploration will travel to various locations throughout the week, including Duluth, MN, with a night’s stay in Superior, WI. Dates: July 11 through July 17, 2010 Prerequisites: Partial Scholarships available ($375). Must provide a teacher recommendation and transcript (minimum 3.0 GPA) as part of your application.
