AIRPORTS IN THE U.S. WITH RAIL ACCESS

We think intermodalism is great! Intermodalism is when as many transportation services are "under one roof" as possible. For passengers, that means that transfers between different modes of transportation (such as air, rail, bus, local transit, automobile, ferry) can be made in one place, without the trouble of transferring between terminals.

On this page, there is a listing of airports in the United States that also have some sort of access to passenger trains or local rail transit. While this is not unusual in Europe, it is still not the norm in the U.S. But the list is growing.

Shown first are airports with direct rail access, meaning the trains come right to the air terminal, and/or use the airport's internal circulator system. NOTE -- In some cases (like Burbank), the distance from train to terminal is quite walkable, but a bus shuttle is provided for those who need or want it. Second is a list of airports with plans to set up direct rail access. Third is a list of airports with rail transit stops nearby, but which require a short trip in a shuttle bus.

There are other cities in the U.S. that have intermodal passenger terminals, usually in their downtown areas, serving several modes of transportation. Examples include Los Angeles, New Orleans, Washington, Harrisburg, New Haven and Boston.
