Amtrak Discount for NARP Members
NARP members are entitled to a 10% discount on the best available Amtrak rail fare—
- Reservation must be purchased or altered at least 3 days (72 hours) in advance of the departure time of each trip segment (unless the letters “CJ” are printed by the fare, in which case changes must be made before the first departure).
- Applies only to the “rail fare.” Does not apply to additional “accommodations charges” for sleeping car, First class, and Business class.
- On Auto Train, good only for the passenger railfare charge (not the vehicle charge).
- The discount is not valid on weekday Acela Express service. It is valid on weekend Acela Express trains. The discount is always valid on Amtrak’s Regional service between Washington and Boston.
- This cannot be combined with most other discount programs (such as AAA, seniors, ten-trip or monthly passes, Air-Rail program, North America Pass, or USA Rail Pass).
- This can be combined with the Explore America discount program.
- NARP members should identify themselves as such when booking a ticket, and must carry a current, valid NARP membership card when paying for tickets in person and while traveling. Each passenger must be in the possession of and present upon request a valid membership card with his or her name on it.
- If you will be traveling within the next 72 hours and do not have a current membership card, email us or call (202) 408-8362.
This discount is valid when using the Amtrak Reservations site to book tickets. Use the following steps:
- Enter the departure and arrival stations (or select “Multi-City Trip” for more complicated itineraries), select the departure date, and the number of each type of passenger.
- Select the departing (and returning if round-trip) trains you want by clicking “Add to Cart”
- For Passenger #1 (and any other passenger who is a NARP member, including family memberships), where “Select” is shown, select “NARP” instead of “Adult.” DO NOT enter anything under “Promotion Code” unless you have been given a particular promotion code, in which case you should select “Adult” as your passenger type (these cannot be combined with the NARP discount).
- Click “Apply Discounts” (you will see how much money your NARP membership saved you on this trip!) then “Enter Passenger Information”
- For each passenger who is a NARP member, enter the NARP member number (should be a 6-digit number—if your number is fewer than 6 digits, enter enough zeros in front of it to make it 6 digits, for example, “5678” becomes “005678”) under “NARP Number.” If you have a Family ($45 or higher) membership, both members will use the same member number.
- Proceed to enter all other information required before submitting your payment.
- “Weekly Specials” discounts booked on the Amtrak Reservations site cannot be combined with the NARP member (or any other) discount.
Sometimes, an Amtrak agent (on the phone or at a station) will not know how to process your NARP discount correctly, or will claim it does not exist. The agent can find everything he/she needs to know about the NARP discount on Amtrak’s own computer system (STARS) by doing the following:
- Enter F3 (function key to get to discounts menu), then
- Enter 3 (for specific discount name), then
- Type in NARP (and information will appear).
You can also ask the agent to try entering passenger type “AR” where prompted.
QuikTrak machines allow tickets to be purchased from scratch using the NARP discount, as long as the conditions listed above are met. Helpful hint: If you forgot to bring your NARP membership card to pick up your pre-paid tickets, use the QuikTrak machine, which will issue you your tickets no questions asked as long as the name on your credit card matches the name on the reservation. Ticket agents will almost always ask to see your membership card.
Other important notes…
- Amtrak will not adjust fares after your trip if you purchase a ticket and did not provide your NARP membership number.
- If you make a change to your reservation fewer than 72 hours before the departure of the segment in question, you will lose the NARP discount and will have to pay full adult fare for each ticket.
- If you plan to use an Amtrak Guest Rewards Select Status coupon to upgrade to Business or First Class before departure, do not use the NARP discount. If you do, you will have to pay extra when you upgrade to match the full adult fare for the original ticket.
