Reconnect the Gulf CoastJoin NARP’s fight to bring back the Gulf Coast Connector! It has been four years since the last Amtrak train ran on the tracks between New Orleans, Louisiana and Orlando, Florida. Yet the economic, environmental, and congestion problems that have been luring Americans out of their cars and into trains have only grown larger. This route segment—which completes the busy I-10 corridor—connects the eight southernmost states that, together, have one of every three Americans and account for half the nation’s population growth since 1970. Though they have previously gone on record admitting that the Gulf Coast is the “missing link” in the national network, Amtrak’s report on restoration of service required by Congress displays unduly pessimistic ridership projections and questionable assumptions about start-up costs. The National Association of Railroad Passengers has launched a campaign—My Gulf Coast—to restore this strategically vital connection in America’s rail network. NARP is being joined in the fight by elected officials, advocacy groups, and communities across the Gulf. |
